"Tomorrow at the Choosing Ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will
decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them."
-Beatrice Prior.
-Beatrice Prior.
The book Divergent is narrated by the main character, Beatrice Prior. The first chapter is Beatrice explaining how her life is. She tells us a little about her faction, which is Abnegation, or the selfless. However, Beatrice has a difficult time fitting in with the rest of her family, which are also Abnegation. This is the part that I loved about the beginning of the book, because it sets the frame of the book.
In the book, today is the day of the Aptitude test. this is the test that you take to see which faction you fit into best. Tomorrow is the Choosing Day, where each person chooses the faction they want to be in. So Beatrice keeps telling herself that it doesn't really matter what the test says.
Beatrice has a brother named Caleb, who really doesn't like talking about the test with his sister. Beatrice analyzes how her brother seems to fit in with Abnegation, it seems to fit him perfectly! She describes how out of place she feels in the hallways on the Aptitude test day.
At the end of the chapter, Beatrice takes a break from explaining her life for her daily routine of watching the Dauntless, or the brave ones, jump off the train that only the Dauntless ride. By the end of the chapter we know that there are five factions, Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent), and Amity (the peaceful.)
